[READING] What the Bible Says_ 주제별 성경 구문

1) Colossians 1:15-20

He/ is/ the image/ of the invisible God, the firstborn/ over all creation.

For[그 이유는]/ by him/ all things/ were/ created:

things/ in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, 

whether[이든지] *thrones or powers or rulers or *authorities;

                * throne 미국식 [θroʊn]  영국식 [θrəʊn] 1. 왕좌, 옥좌 2. 왕위, 보위/  * authority (authorities) 미국식 [ə^|θɔ:rəti;ə^|θɑ:r-]영국식 [ɔ:^|θɒrəti] 1. 지휘권 2. 권한3. 재가, 인가 

all things were created by him and for him. He is before all things,

and in him all things hold together.

And he is the head of the body, the church;

he is the beginning and the firstborn from among the dead[dead people],

so that[목적을 나타내는 접속사로서 '~하기 위해서'] in everything he *might have the *supremacy.                                     * may 의 과거형 미국·영국 [meɪ] 1. (가능성을 나타내어) …일지도 모른다 2. …인지는 모른다(다른 사항・주장 등을 말하기에 앞서 어떤 내용을 인정할 때 씀) 3. (허락을 나타내어) …해도 되다                   * supremacy 미국·영국 [su:^|preməsi;英또한sju:^|preməsi] 패권, 우위; 지상주의 

For[그 이유는] God *was pleased to *have all his fullness dwell in him,

* be pleased to~는 보통 숙어로 함께 쓰이고 뜻은 '~하게 되어서 기쁘다'이다/. * have는 make, let과 같은 사역동사로서 누군가를 시켜서 '~하게 하다'라는 뜻을 지닌 동사. 사역동사는 5형식(주어+동사+목적어+목적보어_을 취하는 동사로서 목적보어 자리에 원형부정사인 동사형을 취한다. 이것은 꼭 외워야 한다. 이 때문에 all his fullness 뒤에 dwell(~에 살다)이 동사원형의 형태로 나왔다.

and through him to *reconcile to himself all things,

* reconcile 미국·영국 [^|rekənsaɪl] 1. (두 가지 이상의 생각・요구 등을) 조화시키다 2. 화해시키다 3. (어쩔 수 없는 불쾌한 상황을 체념하고) 받아들이다 

※ to 부정사는 명사가 되어 주어, 보어, 목적어로 쓰이거나 형용사가 되어 명사를 꾸면주거나 부사기 되어 동사를 꾸며 주는데, 여기서는 부사적 용법으로 쓰여 동사를 꾸며 준다. to부정사의 부사적 용법에는 4가지 정도가 있다. 1) 목적을 나타낼 때(~하기 위해서)    I went to a supermarket to buy a pen.] 2) 감정의 원인을 나타낼 때(~해서)    I am happy to meet you. 3) 결과를 나타낼 때(~하여 ~하다)   My son grew up to be a teacher.(내 아들은 자라서 선생님이 되었다.) 4) 형용사 수식   The apple is not good to eat.

whether things on earth or things in heaven,

by making peace/ through his blood,/ *shed on the cross.

※ shed on the cross는 blood를 꾸미는 형용사구인데, 관계대명사 주격 용법으로서 관계대명사와 be동사가 생략되었다. 원래의 문장은 his blood which is shed on the cross인데 관계대명사와 be동사가 함께 나오면 생략할 수 있다는 영문법에 따라서 which와 is가 생략되었다. 위의 문장이 관계대명사로 연결되기 전에는 두 개의 문장이었다.

* 두 개의 문장: ~by making peace through his blood, His blood is shed on the cross.

→ ~by making peace through his blood which is shed on the cross.(관계대명사 주격 용법)

→ ~by making peace through his, blood, shed on the cross.(which와 is 생략)
