01 창조 Who created the universe?

5) Genesis 1:27

So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.

* one's own은 '자기 자신의' 또는 '스스로 하는'

  ex) This is his own house

       She does her own housework.

* of one's own은 숙어로서 '자기가 소유한'

  ex) She has some property of her own.

6) Genesis 2:2-3

By the seventh day / God / had finished / the work / he had been doing; / so / on the seventh day / he / rested / from all his work. 

* had finished(막 끝냈다)는 과거완료 시제: 과거 어떤 때보다 먼저 일어난 동작을 나타내기 위해서 과거 완료인 had finished를 써 주었다. 과거완료(had+과거분사)는 대과거(과거 이전의 과거)에서 일어난 동작이 과거에까지 이어지는 동작을 나타내는 용법이다. 현재완료 처럼 계속. 경험. 완료. 결과 용법이 있다. 과거완료 진행형은 대과거에서부터 일어난 동작이 과거 시점까지 진행되는 동작을 나타낼 때 쓴다.

a) 완료:

The train had already left when I got to the station.

           (대과거)                    (과거)

b) 경험:

I knew her at once, for I had seen her before.

         (과거)               (대과거)

c) 계속:

Tom had been ill in bed for a week / when I came back.(상태의 계속)

(내가 돌아왔을 때라는 과거 시점 이전의 대과거부터 아파 옴.)

cf) My son had been watching TV for two hours / when I returned.- 과거 완료 진행형

  (과거 이전의 대과거로부터 TV를 보고 있었음)          (과거)

d) 결과:

I found / that he had gone to America.

 (과거)        (대과거에 일어난 일)

e) 대과거:

과거의 어떤 때보다 먼저 일어난 동작은 과거완료로 나타낸다.

사건이일어난 순서로 나타낼 때에는 과거 시제를 쓴다.

I sold / that watch which I had bought the previous day.

= I bought a watch and sold it the next day.

 

* He had been doing은 관계대명사 목적격 용법으로 the work를 꾸며 주는 형용사 역할을 하는데, 관계대명사 목적격으로 사용되었을 때 관계대명사의 생략이 가능해 생략되었다.

★ 두 개의 문장 A) God had finished the work.

                  B) He had been doing the work.

→ God had finished the work(which) he had been doing.

B)의 the work는 생략되고 which로 받아 A)문장에 연결시키는데, 생략된 B)의 the work가 목적어 자리에 있었기 때문에 관계대명사 목적격 용법이라고 한다.

* rest from~은 '~로부터 휴식을 취하다'

And / God / blessed / the seventh day / and / made / it / holy,/ because / on it / he / rested / from all the work of creating / that he had done.

* 동사 make는 5형식의 문장(주어+동사+목적어+목적격보어)으로 쓰여, 뒤에 목적어와 목적격보어를 필요로 한다. 5형식의 해석은 보통'~이 ~을 ~로(라고) 하다'이다. 목적격보어란 목적어를 보충 설명해 주는 보어이다. God made it holy의 해석은 '하나님께서 그것을 거룩하게 만들었다'이다. 목적격보어 자리에는 명사, 형용사, tp부정사가 올 수 있다. 모두 목적어를 설명해 준다.

ex) I made my mom happy.

    I called my puppy Rose.

    I wanted you to clean your room.

* that he had done은 선행사 all the work of creating을 꾸며주는 관계대명사 목적격 용법으로 형용사 역할을 한다.

선행사가 all the work of creating처럼 사람이 아닌 사물일 때 관계대명사는 which 혹은 that이다.

★ 두 문장 A) On it he rested from all the work of creating.(그날에 그는 창조의 모든일로부터 쉬셨다.)

            B) He had done all the work of creating.(그는 창조의 모든일을 해왔다.)

                                         (목적어)

→ On it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done.
